pop folk
what it is
In North American and British contexts, pop folk mixes folk-inflected textures and musical landscapes featuring acoustic instrumentation with driving rhythms and melodic hooks (either ebullient, as in classic pop or, just as often, tinged with melancholy). Not as edgy or hard-hitting but generally more stridently tuneful than folk rock, pop folk emerged out of 1960s acoustic-laden musical directions in popular American and British music, such as the Beatles, and now plays out in both mainstream and indie musical scenes. On the global stage, pop folk seamlessly blends both the pop music and folk music traditions of both the local or national setting and various other styles from around the world.
